They are priced at STG 352 + vat. The box is the same size as a PACCOM Tiny-2 and supports up to 4 Baycom (or Kiss mode) TNCs @ 9600 (it is alleged that greater aggregate speeds are possible). It is essentially an IBM PC (complete with BIOS) with 4 uncommitted serial ports which you can use for whatever you fancy. It make an excellent BPQ node which I am going to use with 3 radio ports (KISS TNCS) and one port connected to the existing BBS PC. The BPQ node software comes in ROM and just boots straight up. I enclose a data sheet cribbed from the instructions:- --------------------- cut here ---------------------------------- MSC800 Mobile System Controller Thorcom Systems Limited have just released a new radio/data comms product called MSC800. The MSC800 is a 80188 target processor board with four RS232 serial channels designed for in-vehicle use for data comms and data processing applications, but also has a wide range of "data engine" radio and data applications. MSC800 was developed to allow Systems Integrators and OEM/VARs to develop mobile data systems quickly and efficiently and use standard PCs for development work and then place final systems in the field with software running from EPROM. The MSC800 comes as standard with a 20MHz processor, 128K SRAM and 64K BIOS and ability to add further RAM or EPROM if required. The BIOS contains INT-14 (COMBIOS compatible) drivers for the serial ports and timer support. A set of support routines, written in C, is supplied to provide access to the serial and timer functions along with some example programs including GPS receiver handling. A version of BPQ AX.25 networking software is available for the MSC800 and supports Baycom type external modems, TNCs operating in KISS mode and NET/ROM inter-node protocol. It is TINY and will happily fit _inside_ a lot of transceivers. ------------------------- cut here -------------------------------- RLC320 miniature packet radio modem Thorcom Systems have recently introduced a new miniature packet radio controller/modem called RLC320. The packet modem supports data transmission at 1200, 2400 and 4800 baud over the radio channel using FFSK audio tones, has two serial ports (one RS232 and one TTL/CMOS) and has a modem disconnect header. The tiny modem measures only 63mm x 44mm x 10mm and draws under 90mA allowing it to be built in to other equipment, eg. radio transceiver. The modem is supplied with standard firmware which offers AX.25 level 2, version 2.0, Extended-AX.25 with 16 frame sliding window & selective reject and KISS/SLIP mode. Other firmware is available to customise the modem for use with GPS core-receivers in Automatic Vehicle Location systems and MAP27 is supported for use on trunked radio systems. Thorcom expect the modem to find a wide range of applications in both the commercial/industrial sectors as well as use in Amateur Radio. I'm sure the DSP could be used as the modem, but is there enough horsepower (I'm planning on using the 56002) to also implement all the other layers to make a full TNC? This sounds like a rather ambitious software effort, and I hoped that someone had already come up with a similar DSP implementation. The good points are price and flexibility. On a limited budget it will give adequate performance and allow you to try quite a few different modes. I should say that I've had mine for over a year and am quite pleased with it. Now for the bad points: The documentation and software is very poor. I still find things buried in the manual or completely undocumented. If you like surprises and experimentation then maybe this is a good point ;-). The SSTV portion, although functional, leaves a LOT to be desired. It can only handle 16 (32?) colors and the resolution is poor. I enjoyed using SSTV when all I had was a B&W VGA monitor but as soon as I switched to colour VGA I lost interest. The FAX software also leaves a lot to be desired although it is functional. Other than that, for normal RTTY, amtor, pactor and packet is fine although not as good as the new DSP multimode controllers. I also use mine for 9600baud packet with the optional G3RUH modem. In summary, its worth exactly what they charge for it and is a good starter TNC that will do a lot of things. ============================================================= John Boudreau VE8EV INTERNET: ve8ev@amsat.org Inuvik, NWT, CANADA PACKET: VE8EV@KL7GNG.#NAK.AK.USA.NA ============================================================= ------------------------------ End of Ham-Digital Digest V94 #213 ******************************
